Steele Creek community invited to July 29 Walker Branch DIRTway meeting

Mecklenburg County Park & Rec will be holding a community meeting on a proposed Walker Branch DIRTway beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, July 29, at Christ the King Church, 13501 S. Tryon St.

A DIRTway is a mowed trail with signage and flat stones to aid in crossing creeks and ditches, similar to what is currently there. The DIRTway will run from the current Walker Branch Greenway Trail across from The Home Depot, cross Walker Branch near the Steele Creek Athletic Association's back parking lot, and continue to Smith Road.

This would be the first DIRTway in the Mecklenburg COunty system. Funding may be available to construct a standard asphalt greenway trail in two to three years. The DIRTway will allow primitive access from neighborhoods along Choate Circle to the existing trail and RiverGate in the meantime.
