— The Clover High School cross country teams begins preseason practice at 6 a.m. Friday.

Head coach Bailey Jackson said they’ll continue the morning runs beyond the coming week.

“We will have afternoon practices once school begins,” he said.

The boys’ team returns four seniors who advanced to the state cross country meet last season – Alex Wilson, Austin Highfill, Eli Allen and Jon Bruney.

“Jon won the 5K race at the Air Force Academy this summer, placing first among 350 participants,” Jackson said.

“The girls’ cross country team returns five to seven solid runners,” he said.

Jackson said CHS girls’ soccer standout Alex Peeler has decided to run cross country this season.

“She will challenge Emily Sparrow for the No. 1 position this season,” Jackson said.

With the cross country and football teams getting an early practice Friday, CHS athletic director Carroll Hester said all of the school’s fall sports teams will begin preseason practice this week and next.

“In addition to cross country and football, the CHS volleyball, golf, tennis and swim teams will be involved in preseason preparations,” Hester said.

“The beginning of fall practice represents exciting times at Clover High School. It’s starting all over, a new season and it’s here. The players and coaches anxiously await the fall sports season.”
