Lake Wylie team lands first in flight

Harry Goff of Lake Wylie and Mike Garrett of Clover finished first in Flight B (6,178 yards) with 36-37-73 in the July 29 Carolinas Golf Association’s Senior Four-Ball Tournament at River Hills Country Club at Lake Wylie.

Jim Sears and Harold Fisher of Lake Wylie finished 37-37-74 in Flight A (6,178 yards), which was won by Robert Desjardins and Bill Beal of Matthews with 35-34-69 first gross.

Super Senior Division (5,687 yards) was won by Melvin Dodson of Sandy Ridge, N.C., and Larry Southern, King, N.C., with 37-36-73. Several Lake Wylie residents golfed that division including Nick C. Locke, Dave Duncan, Mike Shively, Herb Towell, Randy Watson and Ron Farley.

Lupus Foundation event Aug. 26

The Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter will be the beneficiary of the 13th annual Links for Lupus Golf Tournament on Aug. 26.

Presented by Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, the Links for Lupus Golf Tournament will be held at Cedarwood Country Club, 4100 Pineville-Matthews Road.

Registration kicks off at 11 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and dinner reception at 5:30 p.m. All players will receive lunch and dinner, beverages during play, official tournament gift, goodie bag and a team photograph. Prizes awarded for first-third in low net and low gross categories.

Sheriff’s tourney Sept. 16

The Sheriff’s Foundation of York County announces the seventh annual Invitational Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 16 at the Springfield Golf Club in Fort Mill.

Proceeds have provided $29,000 in scholarship money to York County students. Also this year, $1,600 will be used to purchase back packs for York County students. Money raised also will benefit safety patrol programs and provide financial support for Boy Scout Explorer Post 1786,

Sponsorships at all levels and donations for door prizes are needed. Team slots will be available on a first come, first serve basis. The deadline to register is Sept. 3.

Mystery Ball Night Aug. 31

Hospitality House Of Charlotte, a nonprofit organization providing lodging to families of patients receiving medical treatment, has announced it will partner with the Charlotte Knights for its third annual Mystery Ball Night at the Knights Stadium, 228 Deerfield Drive, on Aug. 31 at 7:15 p.m. in a game against the Gwinnett Braves. This is the last Saturday game to be held in the Fort Mill Stadium and will be followed by fireworks.

Fans will have the opportunity to purchase baseballs autographed by a major or minor league player for $10 each, with the mystery being which player signed the chosen ball. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and early arrival is encouraged, as a limited number of signed balls will be available for purchase. Fans also will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for $5 each for the chance to win a $250 US Airways travel gift card.

Game tickets cost $13 each for ages 2 and older and can be ordered through Hospitality House of Charlotte by visiting hospitalityhouseofcharlotte.org/event.asp. A portion of each ticket sold through the Hospitality House of Charlotte website will be donated to the organization, and participants will be entered to win a chance to throw the first pitch at the Aug. 31 game.

• All 10 Flashback Friday Games – Knights will commemorate 24 seasons at Knights Stadium with a series of promotions and giveaways.

New leagues forming

Rock Hill Volleyball Club is starting a new league for boys and girls who do not have a place to play during school volleyball season or who may not make their school’s team.

There will be three divisions for fourth- and fifth-graders, sixth- and seventh-graders, and eighth- and ninth-graders.

Sign ups, conditioning camps underway

Formerly Lake Wylie Pop Warner football and cheer have joined with Clover Co-Op to become D2 Blue Eagles.

There will be free sports conditioning camp from 4 to 6 p.m. Sundays at Griggs Road Elementary School open to all children, regardless of sport or no sport. They do not have to be part of D2 for Camp.

Signups for the new league are underway. Costs is $100 for football or cheer; discounts for multiple children and financial aid available.

LWAA fall registration open

Lake Wylie Athletic Association soccer is accepting registration for ages 3-14 for the fall season online and in-person.

Teams will be formed by mid-August. Practices start the first week of school. Games begin Sept. 7.

In-person registration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 10 in front of Nationwide Insurance at Bi-Lo shopping center.
