Classes for family with mentally ill offered
FORT MILL A free series of 12 classes for caregivers that provides basic education about brain disorders, as well as ways to improve the lives of families with a loved one living with mental illness, begins Aug. 19 at Carolinas Cornerstone Church, 1790 Gardendale Road.
The Family to Family course will cover information about mood disorders, panic disorder, borderline personality disorder, OCD, schizophrenia, and co-occurring brain and addictive disorders. The course will also address coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, recovery and rehabilitation.

Art exhibit applications accepted
LAKE WYLIE The committee for the “Visions of Art” invites experienced and beginner artists in Lake Wylie and surrounding areas to submit works for the Sept. 20-21 non-juried exhibit at River Hills Country Club.
Applications for paintings, sculpture and photography will be accepted through Aug. 23. The entry fee is $30.
Artists age 18 and older may submit three entries with size restrictions. Participants are invited to meet the public at a preview party from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Small Arts Grants deadline Sept. 2
ROCK HILL The deadline to apply for small grants through the Arts Council of York County is Sept. 2.
Small Grants are available to individual artists, non-profit organizations and schools throughout York County. The Small Grants Program provides support for small or pilot arts activities, artist professional development, new and developing programs or organizations, and special projects of high artistic quality that cannot support themselves.
The Arts Council allocates between $3,000-$4,000 to small grant awards each quarter. Organizations and individual artists may request up to $1,000 per grant and may receive up to two grants in a calendar year. Lake Wylie Luau tickets for sale
LAKE WYLIE Lake Wylie Rotary Club will hold its third annual Lake Wylie Luau on Sept. 7 at a new location, Red Fez Club’s outdoor pavilion in Steele Creek on Lake Wylie.
Tickets cost $30 in advance, or $35 at the door, and include music, food, wine and beer, plus door prizes.

Literary competitions announced
ROCK HILL The Arts Council of York County presents its 10th annual Literary Competition, highlighting the best in short stories and poetry from across the Southeast United States and the 2nd annual Youth Literary Competition, highlighting the best in short stories and poetry from across York County. The postmark deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 20.
The 10th annual Literary Competition will include an adult and youth component. Each category will be judged independently. Authors may enter the short story and the poetry competition, and entries are eligible to win an award in each competition. However, there will be no repeat prize winners within the categories. The winners of the youth competition will be awarded certificates of achievement.
Cash awards for literary competition are $100 for first, $50, second and $25, third.
There are no restrictions on subject matter. All participants must submit three copies of each entry for distribution to judges. Email entries will not be accepted. No entries will be returned. Your name must not appear on the manuscript, and pages must be numbered with the title of the entry. Please include the title of the submitted work and all contact information on the entry form. Entry fee for this year’s adult competition costs $15 pr entry for non-members, $10 per entry for members. There are no entry fees for the youth competition. Those submitting to the youth competition must be enrolled in a K-12 program to be eligible to enter.
All participants are invited to a free, public reception and awards ceremony 6-8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Community Performance Center, 249 E. Main St., Rock Hill, where the winners will be announced. Winners are encouraged to read passages from their work at the reception.

The grant provides funding for individuals and unincorporated groups of artists to pursue projects that further enhance their artistic development.

Charity poker run set for Sept. 21
LAKE WYLIE A charity poker run will be held Sept. 21 for Lake Wylie Children’s Charity.
The main concert event is set for Sept. 29. This year’s event is helping the family of 3-year-old Emma Rose Poplin-Revels of Fort Mill, who has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Lake Wylie Children’s Charity last year presented a check to the family of Luke Moore in the amount of $42,500, according to the groups website.
