— The Clover Touchdown Club is at the forefront of community support for the Clover High School football team.

“It’s all about the players and what Chad Smith and the other coaches have done to help return Clover football to the scenario we once had,” President Jamie McMackin said.

“Coach Smith brings a business to the program,” said McMackin. “There’s something going on all of the time. The players are attending church together and enjoying a meal prepared for them.”

Clover’s football resurgence has been felt by the club, said McMackin.

“Our membership has reached 255, the most ever. We have 205 new memberships. Last year we had 80 members.”

Increased revenues have enabled the touchdown club to allocate additional funding to meet the needs of the football team.

“We’ve already provided more funding for the Blue Eagle team than all of last year,” McMackin said.

For example, McMackin said the team reaped the benefits of summer camp, compliments of the touchdown club. “We want to continue to meet the needs of the team,” he added.

Meanwhile, tickets are being sold for the club’s Saturday, Aug. 24, steak dinner and auction, a major Blue Eagle fundraiser.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Clover High School cafeteria, with dinner to be served at 6 p.m.

The guest speaker for the fundraiser will be Stan Spears, retired South Carolina adjutant general and former Blue Eagle quarterback in the late 1950s. Another highlight will be a live auction, with bidding for weekend beach trips and more.

The cost is $60 for two steak dinners. There will be cash drawings for $500 and $250 and multiple door prizes, including Blue Eagle memorabilia.
