Backyard griller contest this weekend
BELMONT The seventh annual Summer Sizzlin’ at Caravan in Belmont starts Friday, Sept. 13, with judging and awards on Saturday, Sept. 14.
This is a non-sanctioned event and is not open to professional teams and individuals. Applications are due today, Sept. 10.
The public is invited to come out Saturday, Sept. 14, for samplings beginning at 11 a.m. and to vote for “People’s Choice” award.

Tailgate auction set for Sept. 21
YORK The Market at Inman Farms will host tailgate auctions at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 and Oct. 19.
The auctions will be offered with Spaulding’s Auction Service. Spots can be reserved for $10. Items will be sold to the highest bidders.
Red Cross names interim director
ROCK HILL The Palmetto SC Region of The American Red Cross welcomes Carey F. Smith as interim executive director of the Upper Palmetto Chapter in Rock Hill, serving Chester, Lancaster and York counties.
Smith hopes to enhance the chapters relationships in the community. He will work closely with the chapter’s board of directors and will assist with the operating responsibilities and fundraising activities for the chapter. Smith also will assist with the recruitment and selection of a permanent executive director.
Smith retired as city manager for the city of Rock Hill in November 2010. He has since served in an interim capacity as city manager for the cities of Georgetown and Hardeeville.
The Upper Palmetto Chapter is part of the American Red Cross Palmetto SC Region, which is made up of seven Red Cross Chapters in 35 counties of South Carolina.

LAKE WYLIE Local Mary Kay consultant Heather Catts is asking the community to help protect our troops through Operation Sunscreen.
Mary Kay has teamed up with Soldiers’ Angels, a nonprofit organization that sends care packages to the troops, to supply soldiers with suncare products.

Farmers market open
FORT MILL Fort Mill’s new farmers market is open at 121 Monroe St.
The market is managed by the Fort Mill Economic Council in cooperation with the town of Fort Mill and runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 26.
The market is for vendors selling agricultural products, produce and plants produced or grown themselves in South Carolina or North Carolina. Brokers will not be allowed. Each 10-by-10 space costs $10, and vendors provide their own tent.
Completed applications and the required documentation must be received two weeks before the vendor expects to sell. Applications are available by calling 803-207-0851 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
