Train kills man sitting on tracks in southwest Charlotte

A man sitting on railroad tracks died after a train hit him in southwest Charlotte Saturday morning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Norfolk Southern Cargo Train Engine No. 3448 called them about 10:45 a.m. to the 5300 block of Nations Crossing Road. The train was traveling south, and the conductor sounded its horn and hit the emergency brakes after sighting the man.

The man did not move off the tracks and was hit by the front of the train, police said.

Medic also responded and pronounced the man dead about 11:10 a.m.

Police will release the man’s name once they contact his family.

There were no passengers on the train, police said.

The major crash investigation unit is investigating and asks anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600, or contact the major crash unit at 704-432-2169.
