One person was killed in a traffic accident Thursday afternoon in the University City area and another person was taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle accident, authorities said.

Late Thursday, authorities identified the person who was killed as Ezzard Charles Jones, 61. The person taken to the hospital, Marcus Sturdivant, 28, was in stable condition. No home towns were listed for the victims.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police gave this account of the accident:

Jones was driving a 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck northwest on the 1200 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard when he crossed the grassy median into oncoming traffic and collided with Sturdivant’s Dodge Avenger.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:13 p.m.

Witnesses told police that Jones was driving erratically for several miles before the crash. CMPD said speed did not appear to be a factor while “alcohol use and/or a medical condition appear to be the main contributing factor in this crash.”

Any witnesses are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704-336-8862.
