Anson officials: Passer-by could have info about homicide case

Anson County authorities are looking for a passing motorist who they think could have important information in the case of a man who was shot to death on a roadside late Wednesday.

Keith Jerome Whisnant, 42, of Ocean Isle Beach, was fatally shot in the chest on N.C. 742, about 5 miles north of Wadesboro, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff Tommy Allen said investigators found surveillance video at a Burger King restaurant on U.S. 74 showing Whisnant alone. Authorities believe Whisnant picked up a passenger somewhere between that Burger King and the N.C. 742-U.S. 52 split near Wadesboro, the sheriff said.

“One passing motorist told investigators he saw what appeared to be two people struggling in the front seat of the vehicle as it sat in the ditch (on the side of N.C. 742),” Allen said.

The sheriff said investigators are looking for the driver of a midsize white car that apparently stopped at the scene. Allen said the driver of the car might have believed it was a minor vehicle collision and might have talked to the shooting suspect.

By the time deputies arrived at the scene, about 8:30 p.m., the passenger in Whisnant’s vehicle was gone.

Anyone with information about the midsize white car or other information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 704-694-4188.
