— Carolina Thread Trail organizers officially opened a new stretch of trail Friday afternoon between Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and Lake Wylie.

The 2.8-mile natural trail sits on a Catawba Lands Conservancy preserve and connects to existing trails at the garden. The trailhead is at 6900 S. New Hope Road.

Tom Okel, executive director with Catawba Lands Conservancy, called the Seven Oaks Preserve trail “one of the real signature pieces” of the overall Thread Trail.

“This trail is going to become and important part of this community and really this region, forever,” he said.

Harding Stowe, representing the family that provided for the garden and much of the funding for the Seven Oaks Preserve trail, said the new addition fits what the late Daniel Stowe envisioned.

“It fits so well into the botanical garden’s mission for the future,” Stowe said.
