Mayor Pro Tem Barnes to head influential Charlotte City Council committee

sharrison@charlotteobserver.comDecember 10, 2013

Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon has named Mayor Pro Tem Michael Barnes chair of the city’s economic development and global competitiveness committee, considered a plum assignment.

That committee used to be chaired by James Mitchell, who lost to Cannon in the Democratic primary for mayor.

Before items reach the full City Council, various committees review issues and vote on whether to advance them for further review. The committee chair helps shape that agenda.

The economic development committee will likely handle a number of important issues in 2014, including whether to support a redevelopment of Eastland Mall and consideration of an amateur sports complex at Bojangles’ Coliseum.

Other committee chairs include: Vi Lyles (transportation); Claire Fallon (community safety); Patsy Kinsey (housing and neighborhood development); John Autry (environment); Ed Driggs (intergovernmental affairs); Greg Phipps (budget); David Howard (governance and accountability); Al Austin/Kenny Smith (retreat planning/coordinating).

Lawana Mayfield is the only council member to not receive a committee chair or co-chair position.
