Air and water advocates join forces

The Charlotte-based environmental groups Clean Air Carolina and Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation have formed a new alliance that will include sharing office space, educational events and programming in 2014.

Clean Air Carolina announced the collaboration at its 10-year anniversary celebration last week. The groups noted that air and water pollution, their respective focuses, often come from the same sources.

Clean Air Carolina honored Sara Behnke, organizer of the community group We Love Mountain Island Lake, and the Southern Environmental Law Center as its 2013 Airkeepers. The law center filed lawsuits over the proposed Garden Parkway in Gaston County and the Monroe Bypass in Union County.

Alan Burns was named volunteer of the year.
