Race on for Thom Tillis’ House seat

A current and former Cornelius town official will face off in a Republican primary for the state House seat being vacated by Republican Speaker Thom Tillis.

Recently re-elected Commissioner John Bradford announced his bid Wednesday. Former Mayor Lynette Rinker already is in the race.

Tillis, who has represented the district 2007, is running for the U.S. Senate.

The district stretches through northern Mecklenburg County and includes Davidson and Cornelius and half of Huntersville.

Republicans make up 41 percent of voters; Democrats and independents each make up 30 percent.

Democrat Natasha Marcus of Davidson announced for the seat last month.

That’s the same month Bradford, 39, was re-elected to a second term on the Cornelius commission, a fact Rinker is quick to point out.

“My initial reaction, quite honestly, was when I and others cast my votes for him Nov. 5 we had hoped his commitment to the citizens would last more than one meeting,” said Rinker, 56.

“I know Lynettte is trying to make that an issue but … it’s clear to me people are not satisfied with the choices so far, so they came to me,” Bradford responded.

Bradford boasts the endorsement of state senator – and former Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte – as well as six current or former Cornelius commissioners and former Charlotte mayoral candidate Edwin Peacock.

Said Rinker: “The only endorsement I want is from the people of District 98.”

Filing for the General Assembly runs from Feb. 10 to 28.
