The condition of a volunteer firefighter who was shot and seriously injured when he happened upon a burglary at his house has worsened, according to a Facebook page maintained by family and friends.

Marcus “Marco” Kauffman has been in the hospital since he was shot in the head on Dec. 2.

“In the last 24 hours, Marco’s condition has worsened drastically,” said a statement posted around 1 p.m. Wednesday on the “Praying for Marco” Facebook page.

“A CT scan last night showed new damage to his brain, and his pressure levels were worse than ever. This morning the doctors expressed that they have done everything they can and that it may be time to let go.”

On Dec. 2, Kauffman and his wife, Maryann, were returning to their home on Chenault Drive in the western part of Rowan County after a Thanksgiving weekend trip. They saw a car stopped near their house, so Kauffman dropped off his wife at a neighbor’s home.

He went to his house and was shot. In the last two weeks, four men have been arrested in connection with the burglary and shooting. Arrest warrants accuse one of the suspects of taking computers, a game console and a handgun from Kauffman’s home.

A .45-caliber Glock was recovered at a home in Iredell County, investigators said. They plan to do forensics tests to determine whether it’s the same gun used to shoot Kauffman.

“We have wept and prayed, surrendered Marco into God’s hands,” the Facebook post read. “We know that God is well able to heal him. But we also know that God does not always choose to heal.”
