Suspect charged in shooting death of man found in Charlotte parking lot early Saturday

A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of a man found in a Charlotte parking lot early Saturday, authorities said.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported that Gregory Paul Jones, 47, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and has been taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded to a call at 2:44 a.m. Saturday at the 1200 block of Lucky Penny Street and found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by Medic. Authorities identified him as Timothy Costella Covington, 52.

The hometowns of Covington and Jones were not immediately available.

Authorities said that the victim and suspect were known to each other, and this was not a random act of violence.

Police were canvassing the area for witnesses.
