A Kings Mountain man was charged with killing his father on Saturday afternoon.

Robert Henry Lovette, 38, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his father, Donald Howard Lovette, 68.

Police were dispatched to the older Lovette’s house on Phenix Street just after 1 p.m. on Saturday after receiving a call to check his welfare.

“Officers arriving at the scene made contact with a male subject that was inside of this residence that refused to cooperate with the officers’ attempt to check on the individual (whose) well-being was in question,” according to a news release from the Kings Mountain Police Department.

Officers made emergency entry into the home and detained the combative man, who was later identified as Robert Lovette. Inside the home, they found the body of his father.

Police have not released a motive in the killing.

Robert Lovette was being held in Cleveland County jail with no bond.

The Shelby star reported that a hammer may have been used in the killing, and detailed a grisly scene: “Drops of dried blood remained on the front steps of 504 Phenix St. on Sunday. Beer cans and fast food containers littered the lawn. Warning signs of “Private Property” and “Beware of Dog” hung off the porch.”
