Relay for Life kicks off Jan. 13 in York

Relay for Life kickoff Jan. 13

The Relay for Life of Western York County will have its annual kickoff celebration 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church, 1184 N. Shiloh Road.

The Western York County Relay for Life will be 11 a.m.-11 p.m. April 26 at York Middle School. Participants are welcome to join in several ways. The organization is looking for new teams, committee members and cancer survivors.

4-H Robotics meeting Friday

The Clemson Extension Service York County 4-H will sponsor a Robotics Club for ages 8 to 12 and will be limited to 12 members. Youth will use 4-H curriculum and use household items to build robots to learn different elements of robotics. The club will be led by volunteer leaders, Jennifer Walker and Patricia Hatch.

The club will meet each Friday at a leader’s home in York beginning Friday, Jan. 10, from 1 to 2:30 pm. Interested youth must register as 4-H member with a $10 state membership fee and there will be an additional club fee that will be discussed with parents when you register. Graham earns Eagle rank

Charles Graham II of Lake Wylie and member of Troop 333 that meets at River Hills Community Church was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on Dec. 28.

For his Eagle project, he constructed tables and benches and landscaped at York County Adult Enrichment Center in York.

He is the son of Charles and Evelin Graham. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the 2013 Men’s Relay swim team at Clover High School that won the state championship in Columbia. Recognized as one of the top 50 students by the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce 2013, Boys State attendee, member Future Business Leaders of America, Life Scholarship winner and a Principal’s Scholar. He is a freshman at Clemson University.

EMS update focus of Jan.15 luncheon

The River Hills Women’s Club will meet at noon Jan. 15 at River Hills Country Club.

Dick Mann, president of Lake Wylie EMS, will talk about medical changes that could have an impact on EMS in York County and also demonstrate the latest CPR method.

Learn about Girls on the Run

Lindy Morris, council director for Girls on the Run Tri County, will be the guest speaker at the Jan. 28 Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Road.

Morris is a graduate of West Virginia University with a background in sales and sales management. She reached out to the Springs Close Foundation, Leroy Spring Complex and Springfield Elementary School to found Girls on the Run Tri County in fall 2003. Since that first group of 20 girls, GOTR Tri County has served more than 1,000 girls a year.

Girls on the Run is a life changing learning program for girls ages 8 to 13. The program is designed to increase physical activity and emotional health by providing girls with the tools to make healthy decisions and form healthy self images. The goal is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development through curriculum based running and walking activities. GOTR Tri County is a nonprofit organizations supported by volunteer coaches and local businesses who provide funding for scholarship programs. For information, visit gotrtricountysc.org.
