A 27-year-old woman was killed Monday morning when the car in which she was riding was struck by a tractor-trailer in north Charlotte, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police identified the victim as Quanisha Layjoyce Cherry. She was a front-seat passenger in a 1988 Lincoln Town Car driven by 29-year-old Adoma Dell Connor. Their hometowns were not immediately available.
According to police, Connor was northbound in the 3900 block of North Graham Street shortly before 7 a.m. when his car turned sideways in front of a southbound 2013 Mack truck driven by a 38-year-old man.
Investigators say Connor told him the car “shuddered,” he applied the brakes, and then the car turned to the left and stopped in the southbound lanes. Connor said a bad shift linkage prevented him from moving the car.
The truck struck the Lincoln moments later. Police say the truck driver told investigators he did not see the stopped car. Investigators added that it was dark and raining at the time.
Cherry, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. Connor was treated for minor injuries and the truck driver was not hurt.
Police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, but they say Connor was cited for misdemeanor death by vehicle. CMPD and the N.C. Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Unit are investigating.
Police ask that any witnesses contact detectives at 704-336-8862 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
