Hog Butchering Day Jan. 11 at Historic Brattonsville

— It’s the dead of winter, time for Hog Butchering Day at Historic Brattonsville, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11.

Experience the Colonial past and witness the traditional family affair of processing and preserving a whole hog. More than 20 historically-dressed interpreters come together for this time-honored practice as they embrace the hog from jowl to ham and everything in between. Observe the making of bacon, chitlins and sausage. Gather around the hearth for 18th century Carolina Backcountry cooking.

The living history museum at Brattonsville will present a sundry of ongoing activities throughout the day.

Throughout the day, visitors can watch interpreters ensconced in household duties such as rendering lard and stirring up a batch of soap, as well as butchering, preservation, and cooking demonstrations. Learn why the early settlers gave thanks to the hog for its food value and utilitarian byproducts.

Gardner’s Barbecue will be available from 11:30 a.m. until it runs out. The Gardner family continues a long tradition of barbecue in the western York County community of Bethesda. Smoked pulled-pork sandwiches and made-from-scratch fresh country sausage sandwiches will be offered.

Admission costs $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for ages 4-17. Historic Brattonsville is located at 1444 Brattonsville Road. For more information, visit chmuseums.org.
