•  Hands on Charlotte: More than 800 volunteers are expected at the MLK Call to Service, a one-day service event at three Charlotte-area schools. Activities 10 a.m.-noon at Randolph Middle School, 4400 Water Oak Drive, Charlotte; at Military & Global Leadership Academy at Marie G. Davis, 3351 Griffith St., Charlotte; and at Blythe Elementary School, 12202 Hambright Road, Huntersville.

•  MLK Holiday Parade: More than 15,000 people are expected for this uptown Charlotte celebration with floats, performers, VIP guests and more. Starting point is Ninth and Tryon streets, continuing to Stonewall Street, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

•  Red Cross Fire Safety Program: About 100 volunteers from Hope Worldwide Charlotte and the American Red Cross will go door-to-door in neighborhoods along Freedom Drive, distributing fire safety information.

Concord

•  Memorial March: 1 p.m., starting at Forest Hill United Methodist Church, 265 Union Street North.

Kannapolis

•  Community Prayer Breakfast: 8 a.m., Bethel Baptist Church, 1209 Opal Street.

Salisbury

•  MLK Parade: 11 a.m., from Liberty and Main streets to Livingstone College.

•  MLK Celebration: 12:30-4:30 p.m., Miller Center, 1420 West Bank Street.

Sunday

Concord

•  Gospel Fest: 3 p.m., Price Memorial AME Zion Church, 192 Spring Street S.W.

Hickory

•  Communitywide Service: 3 p.m., Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 3147 12th Avenue S.E. Speaker: Rev. Aaron Johnson, veteran civil rights activist.

Rock Hill

• Winthrop University’s Inspiration of Life: The university hosts a free celebration that will honor King’s life through song and performance, 5 p.m. in Tillman Hall.

Salisbury

•  Humanitarian Awards Program: 3 p.m., Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1920 Shirley Avenue.

Monday

Charlotte

•  20th annual MLK Holiday Prayer Breakfast, Crown Ball Room of Charlotte Convention Center. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., program begins at 8 a.m. Guest speaker: Hill Harper, actor and author. Ticket information: http://ez-tixx.com/mlk/

•  Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center MLK Celebration, noon, at St. John Baptist Church, Hawthorne Lane. Worship leaders: Rabbi Judith Schindler, Rev. Dennis Foust, Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown.

•  Wreath-laying ceremony: Noon, MLK Memorial Plaza, Cabarrus Avenue.

•  Talent celebration: 1-4 p.m., Logan Center.

Davidson
