Neighbors Helping Neighbors seeks coats, volunteers

— Neighbors Helping Neighbors is holding a coat drive through April.

In its 10th year, the Tega Cay-based group has given away 10,000 coats. The group is reaching out to help surrounding communities as well.

While coats are an immediate need, Neighbors Helping Neighbors is ready to assist residents of York, Lancaster and Chester counties in other ways.

“Our main mission is to help the people in the tri-county area when they have a need, from staying in their home with their family in time of need when they lost a job, to providing essential items like beds and appliances,” said Diane K. Woods, vice president of Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

“It’s not just about helping the neighbor next door,” she said. “We’re growing.”

The group has about 15 members who collect, store and distribute clothes and household goods.

“We’re always looking for more (members), because there’s lots to do,” Woods said.

The group also pays utility and other housing bills for those who demonstrate need. Neighbors Helping Neighbors also has a medical supply lending program for people who need short-term use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes and more.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is counting on public donations of coats, shoes, appliances, furniture and cash to meet its mission.
