School bond focus of Feb. 4 Rotary meeting

Clover School District Superintendent Marc Sosne and Public Information Officer Mychal Frost will present information about the school district’s March 22 bond referendum during the Feb. 4 Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Road.

The presentation will feature a multimedia overview of the five projects included on the $67 million bond package.

Sosne has served as Clover superintendent since July 1, 2007. Prior to coming to Clover, he was superintendent in residence at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. From 1996-2004, he served as superintendent of Pender County Schools in North Carolina; from 1995-1996, he was superintendent at Washington County Schools in Plymouth, N.C., and from 1990-1995, he served as interim superintendent and as assistant superintendent for New Hanover County Schools in Wilmington, N.C. He has also been an elementary and middle school principal and classroom teacher in North Carolina and Rochester, N.Y.

He has a bachelor’s degree in American history from State University of New York at Albany; a master’s in educational administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In addition to his responsibilities with the Clover School District, he is a member of the Clover Rotary Club, Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce board member, and participates in the district’s lunch buddy program. He and his wife, Ann, have two adult children.

Troop 333 BBQ sale Feb. 9

Tickets are on sale for Boy Scout Troop 333 Scout Sunday BBQ Fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at River Hills Community Church.

Barbecue ribs and chicken by the pound, and plates (meat, buns, coleslaw and chips) will be sold. Whole pork butts are sold in pre-orders only.

Money raised goes to High Adventure trips and camping supplies.

GOP group invites new members to Feb. 28 meeting

The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club welcomes newcomers, visitors and members to its Feb. 28 membership luncheon at River Hills Country Club.

Learn about the club’s 2014 goals and planned activities. Membership is open to women and men. At the luncheon, a gift will be awarded to a current club member who signs-up the most new members.

Featured speaker is Kim Wellman, newly-elected president of the S.C. Federation of Republican Women. Past president and member of the West Metro Republican Women in Lexington, Wellman is the assistant vice president of Corporate Marketing Communications for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. She has served in leadership positions for organizations including the Palmetto Place Children’s Emergency Shelter, Junior Woman’s Club of Columbia and the United Way of the Midlands. She currently serves on the development committee for The Children’s Trust of South Carolina.

The meeting will begin with an 11:30 a.m. social, followed by lunch and speaker at noon. Cost of the luncheon is $18 per person.

Sweet Repeat seeks members, store volunteers

Sweet Repeat Charitable Foundation needs volunteers and new members at its thrift shop in Lake Wylie.

Volunteers are asked to volunteer two to six hours a month. Proceeds from the thrift shop go to local charities. Membership applications are available at the store.

Volunteer members the River Hills Lions Club are seeking advertising from local businesses for the community’s 2014 telephone directory.

Ads reach 1,100 River Hills residents. Proceeds help local charities, including River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS. In 2013, more than $50,000 in yellow page sales were donated. Organizations interested in placing an ad should email
