Two people escaped serious injury Friday morning when fire destroyed their home in northeast Gaston County, officials said.

The fire was reported shortly before 5 a.m. at a mobile home on Fox Trail Drive. That is off N.C. 273, between Mount Holly and Lucia.

A neighbor, Charles Black, said the man who lived in the home knocked on his door about 5 a.m., asking for help. Emergency communications officials say firefighters reported heavy flames when they arrived. A man and woman living in the home were treated for smoke inhalation, but their injuries are not life-threatening, officials said.

The residents of the home had at least one pet that could not be found immediately after the fire.

Firefighters battled the blaze in 15-degree temperatures and had to deal with ice that formed when they used water to put out the flames. Crews from the Lucia-Riverbend and Alexis fire departments battled the blaze.

There is no word as to the cause of the fire.
