Today's traffic: Closures on Idlewild Road, East Blvd.

slyttle@charlotteobserver.comFebruary 19, 2014

Early-morning storms have caused flooding on some streets in the Charlotte region, including closing a portion of Idlewild Road near Matthews. Also, a fire has closed part of East Boulevard near Freedom Park.

Idlewild is closed just west of N.C. 51 because of a flooded storm drain. Matthews police reported that about a foot of water was reported in the area. Crews were working at 7:30 a.m. to clear the backup.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police also report high water or other road blockages at Windygap Road and Dixie River Road in southwest Charlotte, at Tyvola Road and Baker Drive in southwest Charlotte, and in the 2700 block of Cedarhurst Drive in east Charlotte.

Another traffic problem is in Dilworth where the 1900 block of East Boulevard is partially blocked as emergency officials respond to a fire earlier this morning. No injuries were reported in the fire, but police asked drivers to avoid that portion of East Boulevard if possible. There is no ETA on when the road might reopen.

Motorists should allow extra travel time this morning because of the wet streets.

Other problems reported at 7:30 a.m.:

Idlewild Road at Rice Road, Mint Hill-Matthews line ... Traffic signal not working.

South Tryon Street at Yorkmont Road ... Collision with minor delays.

Arrowood Road at ramp to southbound I-77 ... Collision with minor delays.
