70-year-old man in Statesville dies from injuries after assault

A 70-year-old man who was assaulted early Saturday morning in Statesville later died at the hospital the same day.

Statesville police responded to an assault report about 12:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Chambers Street, according to a news release. Officers found the injured man, whose name has not been released, and Iredell EMS took him to a local hospital.

He was later taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem with life-threatening injuries, the release said, and died.

The incident is under investigation, and police have not made any arrests. Police ask that anyone with information about the case call them at 704-878-3406, or Iredell Crime Stoppers at 704-662-1340.
