Traffic pattern shift tonight on I-85

Observer Staff ReportsFebruary 28, 2014

— The N.C. Department of Transportation will shift traffic on northbound Interstate 85 to the outside lanes overnight in Cabarrus County.

Work on shifting the traffic is planned from 9 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, between Exit 49 (Bruton Smith Boulevard) and Exit 55 (N.C. 73). During that time, crews will close the right northbound lane.

The pattern shift is being done so crews can work next week on grinding the inside lanes. That process will create a smoother ride and help moisture drain more efficiently from the road surface.

All of this work is part of the $125.2 million widening project on I-85 in Cabarrus County.
