Music Club marks 100 years on Sunday

The Rock Hill Music Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, in Byrnes Auditorium. Featured local performing musicians will be Maury Wilkinson and the Border Quintet, Mignon Eayre, Shirley Fishburne, Jerry Helton and Donald Moe.

The club was founded March 20, 1914, by Mrs. A.E. Smith and a group of ladies and has provided music awards and scholarships and free community concerts.

The Celebration Benefit Luncheon will be 11 a.m. March 29 at the Family Center of Grace Lutheran Church.

As part of the anniversary celebration, the club is granting 17 music awards and scholarships to Winthrop University, Northwestern, Rock Hill High, and South Pointe high schools, South Carolina Federation of Music Club’s Summer Scholarships, and Opera Experience Southeast.

Club hosts fashion show March 19

The River Hills Women’s Club will meet March 19 at River Hills Country Club.

Judy Reed of Chico’s of Rock Hill will emcee a fashion show featuring the latest in women’s designer fashions and the latest fashion tips.

Social time begins at noon with lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Email rhwcmembership@gmail.com to make a reservation.

GOP group holding yard sale March 22 for CAAC

The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women will hold a White Elephant Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 22 in the R.P. Boggs & Co. parking lot at Lake Wylie Plaza. Proceeds go to Clover Area Assistance Center Easter meal program.

Donations of gently-used items including purses, belts and specialty items are accepted. However, no clothing please. For more information or for donation pickup, call 803-431-1691.

Clover Optimists honor essay winners

The Clover Optimist Club hosted the winners of its essay contest on Jan. 31 with dinner and awards.

First place winner was Hannah Mace and second place was Braden Johnson. Third place winner was Kaitlyn Hershey, who was not able to attend.

The top three winners received a medallion, a certificate and a monetary award. The first place essay has been forwarded to the district for statewide competition.

The winner at the district level will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Clover Optimists oratorical contest March 29

The Clover Optimist Club will host its annual oratorical contest for children at 10 a.m. March 29.

Children will be asked to write and speak on the topic “How my passions impact the world.” The speech must be four to five minutes long.

Each contestant must prepare his or her own speech and may receive advice in the preparation.

The contest is open to all youths younger than 19. Parental permission is required.

The contest will be at the Clover Optimist Club, 1500 Tom Joye Road, Clover. Entrants should bring a copy of their speech, a copy of their birth certificate and the application.

Tables available for shrine club sale

Red Fez Shrine Club, 16600 Red Fez Club Road, will hold a community yard and baked goods sale from 7 a.m. to noon April 5.

Relay for Life 5K planned

The Stars of Hope Relay for Life team of First Baptist Church in York will sponsor a 5K Hippity Hoppity Hope Easter run/walk to benefit the relay.

The event, a benefit for the American Cancer Society, will begin at 8 a.m. April 12, and the route will begin at the church and go through a residential part of York.

Early packet pickup will be from 3 to 6 p.m. April 11 in the church fellowship hall. Race-day registration and packet pickup will be from 7 to 7:45 a.m.
