CHS athletes take honors in strength meet

For the first time in 12 years, Clover High School athletes competed at the S.C. Strength Coaches Association Region 8 Strength Meet.

A total of 33 athletes met the qualifications for the meet and 26 chose to compete.

The event was Feb. 22 at Woodruff High School. The strength meet is divided into weight classes and includes all divisions, A to AAAA.

Four athletes claimed their weight class as champions and two more took home a third place finish. The four champions will represent Clover High School on March 29 at the State Strength Meet in Lexington.

Results are:

• JV: 150 pounds, third place, Cody Payne; 205 pounds, champion, Chase Griffin; and 220 pounds, champion, AJ Pennington.

• Varsity: 140 pounds, champion, Shawn Anderson; 160 pounds, champion, Keyshawn Pressley; and 170 pounds, third place, Jakob Morrison.

2 Clover wrestlers quality for state

Two Clover High School wrestlers who qualified for the S.C. Wrestling State Championships recently at the Anderson Civic Center.

Seven Clover wrestlers compete at Laurens High School on Feb. 22 at the Upper State Championships.

The two who qualified for state are junior Zach Conrad, in the 220-pound weight class. He will make his second consecutive appearance at state competition after losing on one match at Upper State Championships this weekend. He finished in third place.

Sophomore Jharee Kerns will make his first appearance at state in the 132-pound weight class after he finished fourth at the Upper State tournament.

The boys are coached by teacher Michael Fitzgerald.

Basketball

Patton, Edmunds named all-region

Two Clover Lady Blue Eagle basketball players have been named all-region after outstanding seasons in Region 3-AAAA.

Senior post player Telliya Patton, who has been a varsity mainstay since the eighth grade, had another solid season for the Lady Blue Eagles.

Junior forward Elizabeth Edmunds, the team’s leading scorer for the season, continued to be a threat from three-point range.

Soccer

CHS soccer players travel to tourney

The Clover High School boys’ soccer team competed in a recent two-day preseason team-building trip to Charleston.

The JV and varsity programs went 3-1 against Stratford and West Ashley.

The trip included a sunrise soccer session on Folly Beach.

The soccer program will be guided by a new coach, Graham Stafford.

Football

Tickets available to hear Swinney speak

Tickets are available at Fred Caldwell Chevrolet in Clover to hear Clemson University football coach Dabo Swinney speak at the March 11 Belmont Hall of Fame inductees banquet.

Swinney, whose flamboyant personality is a crowd-pleaser on the banquet trail, is guest speaker for the event. The tickets are $25.

USA Football camp coming to Rock Hill

The Rock Hill/York County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Rock Hill schools will welcome the USA Football Regional Development Camp to South Pointe High School on April 12-13.

The USA Football Regional Development Camp is for athletes in seventh to 11th grades and focuses on development on and off the field. Participating athletes will have the opportunity to train with NFL and NCAA coaches, listen and learn from former NFL players, and receive an evaluation from an NFL or college scout.
