Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are looking for a white van and its driver, in connection with the death of a woman trying to cross North Tryon Street on Thursday evening.

Margaret Rutledge, 50, of Charlotte, was crossing in the 5500 block of North Tryon Street about 7:15 p.m. when she was hit by a northbound white Chevrolet Express van. The incident took place near Old Concord Road.

Police said Rutledge was not using a crosswalk.

Witnesses told police the van struck Rutledge in the left northbound lane and then veered into the right lane before turning onto Old Concord Road. The van was last seen headed toward Orr Road.

Investigators said the van probably has damage to its grille and will be missing the Chevrolet “bowtie” emblem and a black plastic grille.

Police said they were able to get a photo of the van from a surveillance camera at Central Avenue and Eastway Drive, taken several minutes before the pedestrian was struck.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact detectives at 704-336-8862 or Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
