Truck carrying cattle overturns on I-85 in Rowan County

April 2, 2014

No serious human injuries were reported Wednesday when a tractor-trailer carrying cattle overturned on Interstate 85 in northern Rowan County.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said the crash was reported about 3:30 a.m. on southbound I-85 near the Long’s Ferry Road interchange. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, according to troopers. The tractor-trailer went off the right side of the interstate before overturning.

About 40 cattle were being transported, but none escaped. Two cows died in the crash.

Authorities said the driver was trapped in the cab for a short time before being freed. He was hospitalized, but his injuries are not life-threatening, authorities said.

The southbound lanes were closed for about two hours after the crash. Steve Lyttle
