Clover High junior ranks third in state at strength meet

CHS junior third in state

Clover High School junior Shawn Anderson finished third at the South Carolina State Strength Meet the weekend of March 29.

Anderson competed against the strongest students in the state in the 140-pound class.

He is an honors student at CHS and plays cornerback for the Blue Eagles football team.

Senior Keyshawn Pressley and freshman Chase Griffin also qualified and participated at the event.

Belmont Rec

Youth leagues forming

• Belmont Parks & Recreation Department will hold registration for spring leagues through April 12. Youth baseball is for ages 13-14. Youth T-Ball is for ages 3-6. Youth Golf Clinic is for ages 6-15. USA Football camp Saturday, Sunday

The Rock Hill/York County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Rock Hill schools will welcome the USA Football Regional Development Camp to South Pointe High School on Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13.

The USA Football Regional Development Camp is for athletes in seventh to 11th grades and focuses on development on and off the field. Participating athletes will have the opportunity to train with NFL and NCAA coaches, listen and learn from former NFL players, and receive an evaluation from an NFL or college scout.

Lake Wylie duo ranks first in flight

Harold Fisher and Tom Bookmiller of Lake Wylie golfed 36-41 - 77 for first in Flight B at the March 26 Carolinas Golf Association’s Senior Four-Ball Tournament at The Dormie Club.

Harry Goff and Mike Shively of Lake Wylie finished 41-45 - 86 in Super Senior 65 and older Flight B (5679 yards) at the March 31 Carolinas Golf Association’s Senior Four-Ball Tournament at National Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C.

Tournament format is 18 holes of four-ball stroke play, both gross and net. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by the tournament date, is a member of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association, and has a current USGA handicap index at a CGA member club. The field is divided into three divisions based on age and total team course handicap: Tournament Division-Flight A, Flight B; Super Senior 65+ Division-Flight A, Flight B; and Super Senior 70+ Division.

Tennis

Clover Blue Eagle tennis team still unbeaten

The Clover High School boys’ tennis team remained unbeaten entering last week, with two more wins the week before.

Playing at Lancaster, the Blue Eagles defeated the Bruins 6-0, with No. 1 singles Andres Leon prevailing 6-0, 6-0, and No. 2 Justin White besting his opponent 6-0, 6-2.

No. 3 Patrick Smith won 6-3, 6-2 and No. 4 Rob Long won 6-1, 6-3. Playing No. 5 singles, Garrett Smith won 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Holden McGill and Sean Elder finished the scoring by winning 6-1, 6-2.

The Clover tennis team improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the region with a 5-1 win over Nation Ford. “It was the first region win for the Blue Eagle netters against the Falcons in several years,” said head coach Phil Wingard.

White, Long, Garrett Smith and McGill all got straight-set singles victories. Cameron Scobie and Elder won in straight sets at No. 2 doubles. Patrick Smith battled hard before coming up just short at No. 2 singles.

Running

Girls on Run 5K May 10

Spring Girls on the Run 5k begins at 8:30 a.m. May 10 at downtown Rock Hill.

It is the 10th anniversary of Girls on the Run Tri County SC. The nonprofit organization offers a 10-week afterschool program for girls in third to eighth grade. The program focuses on developing and enhancing girls “competencies to successfully navigate life experiences along with promoting healthy habits for lifelong fitness and wellness.”

Cannoli Run May 17 in Fort Mill

The second annual Cannoli Run will be held at 9 a.m. May 17 at St. Philip Neri Church grounds, with 50 percent of proceeds going to Fort Mill Care Center.
