Lady Blue Eagle softball team defeats York

— Seeking to gain momentum for a playoff run, the Clover High School girls’ softball team defeated York 14-3 Friday at the York Comprehensive High School softball complex.

The Lady Blue Eagles used a familiar formula in the Region 3-AAAA win – the strong pitching arm of Elizabeth Edmunds, timely hitting up and down the lineup and solid defense.

Two reliable hitters for Clover, Blake Wallert and Marisa Harkey, provided the power surge.

Wallert belted a three-run homer and Harkey crushed a line drive solo homer that just cleared the left-field fence.

“We had players out because of injuries, including Blake, who missed eight games,” said coach Shea Hall. “We’re getting players back at the right positions. Elizabeth had a solid game on the mound and we played good defense.”

The CHS girls played at Union Tuesday, and were awaiting word about who the opponent would be in a first-round playoff game.

“We have a great group of kids,” said Hall. “They never quit. We will get focused for the playoffs.”

The Lady Cougars plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but it wasn’t enough to hold off a Clover team that won the region championship the last three years.

“Clover hit the ball well,” said YCHS coach Susan Lee Ballard. “We’ve got to learn to hit the ball back.”

Ballard said the Lady Cougars will miss the team’s senior leaders and their contributions to the program. The seniors include Nora Childers, Mattie Ballard, Brianna Beverly, Marissa Jackson and Brooke Ramsey.

“Progress was made this season,” said Ballard. “We had a better record than last year. We look for next year to be better than this year.”
