The man whom Lancaster, S.C., city police wanted for questioning after two Saturday afternoon shootings has killed himself, officials say.

Sammy Lee Baskins Jr., 48, of Lancaster reportedly committed suicide as officers tried to make contact with him early Saturday evening, police said.

Baskins was wanted for questioning after two women were shot just minutes apart, according to police.

Officers were called to 103 Penny St. at 12:28 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a 56-year-old woman who had been shot multiple times, officials said.

Police were then called to a second shooting at 12:31 p.m. at Palmetto Place Apartments. A 28-year-old woman had been shot once at close range, officials said. The victim was holding a small child at the time of the shooting, but the child was not hurt.

The women were taken to Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, which was placed on lockdown as a precaution, police said. Both women were later airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. The lockdown ended about 3:35 p.m.

Police believe these shootings are related and that Baskins and the victims knew one another. Officers were in the process of obtaining warrants for Baskins’ arrest when they learned where he was.
