A driver was taken to the hospital with potentially life threatening injuries after hitting a utility pole in Gastonia Saturday evening, officials said.

The wreck happened near the intersection of North Firestone Street and Rankin Avenue around 5:13 p.m., according to the Gastonia Fire Department.

The vehicle struck a large utility pole on the side of the road, officials said, which snapped the pole near the bottom and caused it to rest on the four-door sedan.

Emergency personnel remained on the scene about 45 minutes. Firefighters had to get into the vehicle to remove the driver, who was taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center, according to the department.

No other injuries were reported.
