— Saturday’s six-hour event on Lake Wylie helps make a difference in fighting cancer.

The fourth annual “Gettin’ Lucky on the Lake” benefit for The Leukemia & Lymphoma at Red Fez Club features raffle prizes, games, food and music.

The event is organized by leukemia survivor and Lake Wylie resident Joanie Grubb, along with a team of about 30 volunteers, including family and friends. Last year, the event raised $22,000.

“We’ve grown significantly every year,” Grubb said. “This is an awesome community and very generous.”

Paul Jeter, executive director of the South Carolina Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Columbia, said Grubb’s team is their organization’s top non-corporate fundraiser in the state.

“They are champions in my book,” Jeter said.

Leukemia and Lymphoma are blood cancers, and the money from fundraisers supports research, education and patient services, including medical copay assistance. Jeter said events such as “Gettin’ Lucky on the Lake” make a huge difference in fighting cancer.

“Forty percent of the drugs approved by the FDA in the last 12 years are for blood cancers and many have been re-purposed for arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and breast, prostate, and colon cancers.”

The event features a reverse raffle with the last number drawn winning the $1,000 grand prize. Additionally, every 10th number drawn wins back the cost of the pre-purchased $50 raffle ticket. Other prizes, including a new golf club set and bicycle, will be raffled from tickets that can be purchased at the event.

New this year is music hosted by Kyle Beam from WSGE 91.7, and food and drinks from Hickory Tavern. Some of the games in the lineup include darts, a wine pull and a pie throw.

Volunteers also will be selling T-shirts and other merchandise.
