LAKE WYLIE
The community coat and winter clothes drive sponsored by the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce and Lake Wylie Pilot is gaining so much momentum, the results are being measured by the truckload.
“I've taken three loads down so far and (event partner) Charles Wood told me he has another one ready to go,” said Dave Decker, owner of Cleaners At Work in Lake Wylie. “We're talking a tremendous response from the community.”
Wood and his business, Anchor Self Storage, collect the winter items along with Lake Wylie Retirement & Assisted Living. Also being collected are canned goods and toys for Christmas. Items will be distributed through the Clover Area Assistance Center and Clover School District.
“Obviously we've had a tremendous response, which is wonderful,” said Susan Bromfield, president of the chamber. “There've been coats in all sizes. Really nice coats of good quality and warm coats, many of them for children.”
After collection Decker dry cleans the coats prior to delivery. He now says he will even pick up coats for people unable to deliver them, with a day or two notice. Winter items in all sizes are accepted. The drive likely will wind down with the holidays approaching, but continues at least up until Thanksgiving.
“We've got a lot of coats here,” Wood said.
Bromfield said she hopes to be finished by Dec. 1, but “will never turn away donations.”
