I am writing to express my concern over the recent realization that one of our school board members, Bob Magee, is not a full-time resident of our area. I chose to e-mail Mr. Magee and give him an opportunity to address the concerns that I have. I have included the full text of the e-mail I sent him as well as the inadequate response that I received from him. Here is my email:

Mr. Magee,

I read the article in this week's Pilot regarding your position on the school board and the question of your residency. I have to say I am concerned about what I read. I understand your desire to serve out your term. I would imagine you have the best of intentions and would like to complete the job you were elected to do. It is wonderful that you have perfect attendance for your board meetings and that you bank and do other things locally.

What I don't understand is how you can feel that you can do a better job serving the families and schools of Clover than someone who actually "lives" here. In my mind living here is completely different than having a residence here. As much as it sounds good to say that you go to the meetings, go to the gym, bank here, you are not living here. When you are living here on a day-to-day basis, you get the feel from the community every time you go out your door, or walk down your street, or go into the grocery store. You are quoted in the Pilot as saying "People can get in touch with me." Shouldn't it work the other way? Shouldn't you be the one getting in touch with the community?

For me the question does not come down to if you can do a good job at what you were elected to do and does your residency fall within what the states requires. The question comes down to are you acting on the best interests of the community and living up to the good faith the community has put in you. I am assuming you did not foresee a major life change taking place during your term, but it apparently did.
So why not do what is best for the community and schools of Clover and let someone who actually lives here serve out the remainder of your term.
I am doing what you suggested in the Pilot article, I am e-mailing you to express my concerns, so I would appreciate it if you would live up to your end of the bargain and provide me with a legitimate response to my concern.
Here is the full text of the response I receieved from him:
Dear Ms. Winter,
Thank you for your note.
Sincerely,
Bob Magee
I am sure anyone reading this letter can understand why I am a little let down with his lack of response. I am not writing this letter to try to upset Mr. Magee, this is not personal. This is about what is right for our community and our schools. Don't we deserve more of an explanation than this?
