EVERY ONE VOTE
The incumbent Tom Smith will be in a runoff facing David McCorkle.
While the vote was in Tom's favor, it was not enough to get outright
elected. There will be no Democratic candidate in November, so the runoff will be tantamount to election. The total vote among the three Republican candidates was a little over 1,000. It is a sad fact that a thousand votes decide the representation of, at least I guess, 30 times as many citizens in District 2.
Another deplorable situation: the Democrats could not find a candidate for Council District 2. Or, did they actually decide not to field one, considering representation at the council as unimportant?
It seems that McCorkle claims to have "An Independent Voice
for York County." Certainly better than representing the owners of the land and the developers only. It is the people who need to be taken care of by county legislation .
I hope that somehow a discussion of the issues can be arranged
with Smith and McCorkle and that it will be reported in the Pilot in detail.
I personally must address the perennial issue of incorporation of Lake Wylie as a city. Some years ago, I was part of group investigating it. It looked like it would be a lead pipe cinch.
I wrote a few times on it in the Lake Wylie Magazine (now the Pilot), always in favor of it. I would suggest that this should be discussed by McCorkle and Smith.
If they are ignorant of what incorporation would mean, let residents who know explain it to them, such as one-time councilwoman Peggy Upchurch.
Another item: communication. Mr. Smith rarely communicated with the people who appointed him. When he did , it was indirect and dealt exclusively with development, which also is within his business interests.
A monthly Council 2 column in the Pilot is sorely needed. Or should it be weekly?
The people should be encouraged to vote in the runoff. Folks, vote for the one who makes more sense!

HELP AMERICANS
This letter is in response to the letter from Heather Roberts of Lake Wylie published June 10 in the Lake Wylie Pilot.
We need to urge the Senate to do something about the gas situation we are having, not the African AIDS crisis.
Americans always respond to other countries that are in need with money, food and volunteers. Do you see any country running to help Africa, and other countries that still hate us?
The U.S. cannot save the whole world and care for its own. We are not the wealthiest country in the universe. We send our soldiers to fight their battles for them, so stop with the sob story please. I am sure they have doctors and hospitals and the medical supplies they need to care for their own.
We have a crisis right here with all the flooding. Do you see any country breaking their necks to help us?
Let every country solve their own problems the way we do.
