LAKE WYLIE -- Parishioners at Lake Wylie's All Saints Catholic Church did something May 4 that had never been done before in the parish's 25-year history. They held a May crowning in their new Mary's Garden.
Catholic churches hold a May crowning ceremony to honor the Blessed Virgin Mother. The ceremony took on added meaning as it was the first ceremony in the newly constructed Mary's Garden. Eagle Scout candidate Zach Smith created the garden as his Eagle Scout project, working with Father Fabio Refosco and Faith Formation students, directed by Joanne Kazista.
"I wanted to do something for my church, and Mary is such a strong image for our faith that I decided I wanted to create a Mary's Garden for my church," Smith said.
Fr. Refosco said the garden adds to the church by providing a setting to gather to celebrate the Blessed Mother.
"I think Mary is the link that brings us all together," he said. "As a community of saints, we reach out for her intercession on our behalf and also as we reach out to others in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ."
| The Faith Formation group raised the money to purchase the statue of Mary and helped to plant the flowers around the garden Smith and volunteers designed. | During the celebration, seventh-grade students Amanda Sipple and Mike Hocking placed the crown of roses on the statue. |
| "It was pretty cool," Hocking said. "It makes me feel proud of myself, knowing that I was the first to place a crown on Mary at our church." | |
