Dining Out

  • Dining out: Fired up for Brixx Wood pizza

If you like pizza and beer, put Brixx Wood Fired Pizza on your list. Even if you don't like pizza and beer, put Brixx in uptown Charlotte on your list, because there are plenty of other tantalizing menu items, a weighty 14-wine list (including half-price Sundays) and a children's menu.

  • Dining Out: Jump to Jumpin' Java in Fort Mill

e all know Southerners are known for frying everything, and one of those delights is fried green tomatoes. I would never have dared dream of eating green tomatoes, (heck, I don't even like red ones), but as the saying goes, "when in Rome ..."

  • Dining out: El Mexicano hits flavor, not wallet

Sometimes when the Clover Community Theatre board members get together for monthly meetings, the location is simply "the Mexican restaurant in Clover." We all know where it is and come hungry for dinner. On a corner just north of the downtown on U.S. 321 is El Mexicano, with plenty of parking and lots of seating.

  • Dining out: Maestro's in Pineville music to my tastebuds

Who'd have thought a shiny gold-painted brick wall and fireplace could be classy, not tacky? At Maestro's Bar & Grill, the decor in this restored 110-year-old home (just off Main Street in Pineville, N.C.) is beautiful and well-thought to the detail, from the small gold violins that hold the curtains back to the sheet music wallpaper in the marble and tile-adorned restrooms.

  • Dining out: Ebenezer Grill in Rock Hill, hot dog!

I'd heard about some weenie who stole the hot dog sign in front of Ebenezer Grill in Rock Hill. In fact, the story grabbed the national spotlight. Still, I'd never been to this "culture icon," as a friend put it, for those good ol' American hot dogs. Sometimes, just as I get a craving for burgers, I crave sinking my teeth into a good hot dog.

  • Dining out: All aboard for The Coal Yard

t comes as no surprise to me that I thoroughly enjoyed my steak sandwich at The Coal Yard in York, because the readers of our sister paper, the Enquirer-Herald, voted it "Best Steak" in western York County. It also was named Business of the Year 2007 by the Greater York Chamber of Commerce.

  • Dining out: Shirley's in Belmont keeps it simple

Relying on a chicken salad recipe that keeps the place in business and prices reminding diners of simpler times, Shirley's Restaurant makes the food you would make for yourself if you knew how.

  • Dining out: Liu Liu's serves fresh twist

Liu Liu's at Baxter Village in Fort Mill, located just off Interstate 77, used to be one of my restaurants of choice when it was called Uncle Liu Liu's in Lake Wylie at the now ghost town of a plaza, behind the McDonald's on S.C. 49. It was my favorite Asian restaurant anywhere, in fact, because the food was always fantastic -- light, fresh and flavorful.

  • Dining out: Coast Grille's grits rock!

Well, now I've gone and done it. After living in the Carolinas for more than 11 years, I've got a new craving besides sweet tea and barbecue. It's grits. Yep, Coast Grille in Rock Hill has this Yankee hook, line and sinker. I've sampled them from friend's plates from time to time in the past, never enjoying the taste, or was it the texture? I'm not a fan of warm cereals to begin with. Maybe it's because of mom, but I do keep trying foods that I don't like. Once in a while, I find I like something I never did before -- and now, I'm in love.

  • Dining out: Lake Wylie Pizza serves grand Italian

Along S.C. 49, just after the Buster Boyd Bridge, is a road-frontage Italian restaurant where six outdoor umbrella tables seat five each, a great way to enjoy springtime in Lake Wylie.
